Retired mechanic Katrina Smith, 55, ensured the 4×4 has all the mod cons so she’s ready to embark on a once-in-a-lifetime trip across Africa next month.

Named ‘The Beast’, her Land Rover Defender is fit to live in after seven months of conversion.

According to Katrina, the Land Rover is the only one of its kind to have a built-in hot-and-cold running water shower.

It also has a kitchen area with a gas hob, fridge freezer and plenty of storage.

Katrina installed a pop-up tent on the roof, which pivots on one end to provide a double bed, while there’s a second double bed inside and a hammock positioned horizontally across the front seats.

The mechanic even went to the trouble of fitting a removable steering wheel so the hammock has more space.

The hack will also make it harder for thieves to steal the vehicle.

Katrina Smith said: “It was a pretty nice vehicle to start off with – it cost me around £30,000.

“I ended up ripping out all the leather trim, cutting it apart and drilling holes in it – all things that are irreversible – it felt so wrong.

“But it is truly a one-off – I designed it all myself and put a shower in it, which has never been done before.”

She is heading to Africa, where she will tour the continent – travelling through Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Cape Town and Morocco.

Katrina also worked as a teacher, so will volunteer at Little Angels Orphanage in Uganda.

Katrina is no novice when it comes to ambitious trips, having made the epic journey to Timbuktu on a quad bike 11 years ago.

Along with a friend, the 55-year-old drove 12,000 miles through southern Spain and Morocco, past landmines in the Sahara Desert, through Senegal and Mali, eventually arriving at Timbuktu.
